Beach Americana – Senior Team 2019

I met up with my Senior Team at Assateague National Park for this shoot to celebrate Independence day.  Beautiful day, the beach, fun, and friends, what else you could ask for.  I am thankful for the freedoms that we have and for the simple pleasure of being with people and getting to capture moments and experiences with others.  Enjoy your July 4th holiday.

17(or more) Favorites of 2017

2017 has been a fabulous year, all because of my amazing clients.  As I look back on 2017 with gratitude for my wonderful clients and pride in the work that I have done for them I also look forward to what 2018 has in store.  In 2017 every senior portrait session that I photographed was unique and a creative joy.  In trying to narrow down to 17 of my favorites it was an incredibly difficult process.  What made it difficult was that I have favorites from every session, I love and value ALL of my clients, and because I am proud of all that I have created with my clients this year.  I started out this post with a narrowed down galley, but I couldn’t help myself….there are more than 17.  Here’s a a heartfelt “Thank You!” to my clients this year and best wishes for a wonderful 2018.  Enjoy!

Walk in the woods

When I first moved to Salisbury from Northeast PA(near where The Office was filmed), I wasn’t immediately won over by the flatness and the lack of variety of the terrain.  I had grown up among the Appalachian mountains and near the rushing waters of the Delaware River.   Little did I know, and would soon discover, that the Eastern Shore is one of the most beautiful places on this earth.  It may not have much to offer in terms of elevation, but the scenery is to die for.  From the salty sea air and powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean, miles and miles of pristine beaches, little streams, marshland, and dense forests it is a photographers dream.  Since moving here I have fallen in love with the beach and count this area my home.  Not much beats a kayaking trip through the streams and lush marsh lands or an evening bonfire on the beach surrounded by good friends and good food.  This is the place I get to call home and where I get to work.  Everyday that I photograph a client is often an adventure into a breathtaking spot that you would be hard-pressed to discover anywhere else.

As a photographer of high school seniors one thing that makes me unique is my Senior Team.  Every year I have the privilege of working with an exclusive group of beautiful young ladies.  We spend the entire year playing together and photographing in many of these locations I have been talking about.  We often meet for special shoots to showcase a theme or take an idea that the girls have and bring it to reality in coordinating and photographing them.  My aim is to not only capture amazing portraits for my clients but to tell their story.  Over the years I have shared many images knowing that those images would tell their own story.  And I believe they have.  Yet I have also wanted to deepen that experience for my clients this year, not only in the images but in the story telling of their sessions.  This blog post is a starting point for me in that regard.  This first post may be a little rough around the edges, but I want to convey what it’s like to work with me and, in a sense, have you come along with us on the shoot.

Recently, Hallie, Emily and I trecked into the Pocomoke Forest on an unusually warm spring day.  You know, one of those perfect days where it hasn’t been warm enough for the bugs to become active, yet warm enough to feel the sun on your skin and a cool breeze through your hair. As we wandered through the woods Hallie and Emily chatted about prom, life, and friendship.  They giggled at inside jokes, at me tripping over some fallen branches, and the sheer enjoyment of them being together and creating a memory that would deepen and add another facet to their friendship.

The tall majestic oaks, the gently unfolding branches of the maples, straight as an arrow pines, and the spindly reaches of speckled dogwood trees became our backdrop for the afternoon.  The springtime sun hung low in the sky creating that perfect backlight and giving the images we created a wondrous glow.  This part of the forest is unique because it not only contains dense groupings of trees but areas where natural reeds and tall grass abound.  I do not know what the grasses are called but they are pure honey amber color, waist to shoulder height and sway gently in the breeze of the afternoon.

I brought along my old Nikon F4 loaded with the last roll of TMAX that I could find in the studio.  I am planning on ordering some more and doing more personal work with film(but that is another story and another blog).  We stopped on the graveled road and I handed the F4 over to the girls and they enjoyed an impromptu photo session as they used us the last few frames on the roll of film.  As you can see they had some fun and Emily looked right at home with that camera in her hands.  They commented on the cool camera strap, which is older than both of them put together.  It felt great knowing that I have something vintage that resonates with them, after all I am somewhat vintage as well.

I am not a fashion expert by any means, usually just a jeans and t-shirt guy(or whatever my wife dresses me in), but I loved the jean jacket and simple outfit Hallie wore.  Anytime your outfit moves people to see your face and your real beauty I think that is a winner.  Emily got her overall skit at American Eagle and I must say, it was absolutely adorable…another win.  They both wore some great accessories to round out their outfits(bracelets, leather choker, rings, and the shoes…never forget the shoes).

Emily and Hallie…thank you for joining me on such a beautiful day.  Thank you for trekking through the woods and the briars for these portraits.  I am beyond excited to work with you this year.  You inspire me as all of the Senior Team has been doing this year and I look forward to more amazing experiences with you and of course capturing more images.  I hope that you loved this session as much as I did, you both rock!!!

Jackie’s Senior Portrait – sneak peeks – Fenwick Island senior portrait photographer

Meet Jackie!  I had the pleasure of meeting this beautiful young lady a few weeks ago up in Fenwick for her senior portraits.  She is the BFF of Katie and their families vacation in Fenwick every summer.  We had a blast photographing around their summer homes, on the beach, and on the bay.  It was a fun evening photographing these girls together and each by themselves.  Thanks for making this session amazing.  Enjoy the sneak peeks and have a great senior year!

Open Mic Night – James Seip Photography 2014

There are some nights during my year that are difficult to put into words.  When I started in this business I wanted to have a creative way to say “Thank You” to my wonderful clients, something that was different and something that would combine what they loved with me and my photography.  Open Mic Night was born out of that desire and my love of music.  Over the years I have had the great privilege of photographing and getting to know so many musically talented people.  Open Mic Night allows those two worlds to collide in a beautiful and ethereal evening of wonderful music, delicious coffee, and rich friendship.

This year’s event did not disappoint.  We outgrew our venue last year, so we moved our Open Mic to Viva’s second, much larger shop.  This was a good switch seeing that people were pouring out the doors as even more clients performed and invited their friends and family to enjoy the evening.

Thanks to all who shared their musical gifts and talents.  I was blown away again by the caliber of the performers and the range of music that came from the stage.  Thanks as well to everyone who came out to support the performers and enjoy a wonderful evening.  I look forward to planning next year’s Open Mic Night and having my clients take the stage yet again for an amazing evening of music and friendship.

Amanda had the presence of mind to capture the event so that we could share it on the blog and facebook.  So here are a few images from the evening.  Till next year!!!!

Portraits in the snow – Pemberton Park Salisbury, MD portrait photographer

We don’t get much of the white stuff here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, but when we do you’ve got to take advantage of it.  So I grabbed my camera and headed out into the snow to photograph one of our beautiful high school clients, Sadie.  Pemberton Park was empty and pristine.  The air crisp and the setting was beautiful with the couple of inches of snow covering everything.  Massive icicles graced the eaves of the old barn, in short it was perfect.

Thanks Sadie for enduring the cold and for meeting me at the park to capture some unique portraits.  I had fun taking these in the snow and I am loving the black and white images from this session.

Sarah + Mike {wedding sneak peeks} 9-28-2013

Getting to be part of a wedding is a great honor and privilege for me in and of itself.  I get to capture a couple’s love story as it unfolds before me.  This one was filled, literally stuffed, with moments worth capturing and remembering.  Like this quote from a journal entry that Sarah had framed sitting on a table at her wedding reception.  It was just one of many special details that marked their beautiful wedding day.

“He(Mike) is nice, caring, funny, smart, very cool, and he treats me like a person not some gross girl.  I am planning on telling him that I’ve liked him since November-95′, soon.  I really hope he likes, loves me too.” – Sarah B.

As you can see, Mike and Sarah’s love isn’t a new development, but one long in the works and on September 28th Sarah got her wish.  She married the one that loves her like no other in the wedding of her dreams.

Mike and Sarah,

We wish you the best as you begin the journey of marriage.  We are grateful to have been part of your AMAZING day.  We hope in some small way these images will remind you and your family of what we and others will always remember about your day.  Mike’s first glimpse of you walking down the aisle,  Pa-Bud performing the ceremony, your Dad’s gentle kiss on your cheek before the ceremony, the laughter and deep friendship of your amazing bridal party, the unbelievable toasts and Dad’s speech at the reception, Dad leading some rousing dancing with the Bozick clan, the lovingly crafted reception, the sincerity and simple love you have for each other and your family.  These are just a few things that will always mark your day for us.

Thank you for trusting us to capture your story and the beauty of your wedding.  I’ve been struggling all day to write this post, and I feel anything more will come up short to adequately explain you as a couple or the experience of photographing your wedding.  So, I will cease with the words and let the images tell their story.  Enjoy the sneak peeks.

Sincerely-James and Amanda

Jessica’s {sneak peeks} Senior Portrait Photographer, Mardela Springs MD

I got to meet Jessica out at her grandfather’s house in Mardela Springs just the other night for her senior portraits.  It is an amazing property right on the water with beautiful bamboo groves, zinnias growing from every nook and cranny in the back garden, and did I mention the water.  It was the perfect setting for Jessica’s senior portraits.  We wandered around the property capturing these and many other images.  Her boyfriend Justin even jumped in for a few.  It was a great session.  Enjoy the sneak peeks.

Lilly’s {sneak peeks} – Senior Portrait Photographer Fenwick Island, DE

I have had the pleasure of photographing all of the DiNardo kids for their senior portraits.  I was excited to meet up with Lilly in Fenwick the other night to capture hers.  We spent the evening photographing on the beach before the clouds rolled in and darkened the sky, but we got these and many others before that happened.  I love being at the beach and photographing seniors in that element.  Plus I love when seniors put some thought into their outfits.  A friend of Lilly’s mom had given the blue and white pants to her a while back and Lilly had them altered so that she could wear them for her portraits.  I loved the retro/vintage look that they gave to her portraits.  Plus, while we were taking these pictures the friend showed up and loved seeing Lilly in her old pants.  These are just a few sneak peeks.  Enjoy!
